چکیده

Dramatic strides have been made in treating human waste to remove pathogens and excess nutrients before discharge into the environment, benefit of ground surface water quality. Yet these advances undermined by dramatic growth Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) which produce voluminous quantities untreated waste. Industrial swine routinely streams similar that a municipality, yet wastes are held open-pit "lagoons" at risk rupture or overflow. Eastern North Carolina is coastal plain with productive estuaries imperiled more than 2000 permitted facilities housing over 9 million hogs; associated 3,500 manure lagoons pose sensitive estuarine ecosystems, as breaches overflows send large plumes nutrient pathogen-rich waters. Understanding relationship between pulses quality environments essential effective CAFO policy formation. In this work, we develop system ODEs model algae estuary due lagoon breach investigate thresholds above algal blooms unresolvable.

Algal Blooms and Cyanotoxins in Jordan Lake, North Carolina

The eutrophication of waterways has led to a rise in cyanobacterial, harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) worldwide. The deterioration of water quality due to excess algal biomass in lakes has been well documented (e.g., water clarity, hypoxic conditions), but health risks associated with cyanotoxins remain largely unexplored in the absence of toxin information. This study is the first to document ...

CALPUFF and CAFOs: Air Pollution Modeling and Environmental Justice Analysis in the North Carolina Hog Industry

Concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) produce large amounts of animal waste, which potentially pollutes air, soil and water and affects human health if not appropriately managed. This study uses meteorological and CAFO data and applies an air pollution dispersion model (CALPUFF) to estimate ammonia concentrations at locations downwind of hog CAFOs and to evaluate the disproportionate e...

Swine CAFOs

husbandry practices in the United States have been industrialized, resulting in an increased number of large corporate and contract livestock operations raising thousands of animals in a single facility. Industrialized farms achieve economies of scale through specialization, increased size, and close confinement that allows high animal densities on relatively small land areas (1,2). These chang...

Characterization of non-methane volatile organic compounds at swine facilities in eastern North Carolina

Samples were collected and analyzed in a field study to characterize C2–C12 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted at five swine facilities in Eastern North Carolina between April 2002 and February 2003. Two sites employed conventional lagoon and field spray technologies, while three sites utilized various alternative waste treatment technologies in an effort to substantially reduce gaseous ...
